Our Source and Build service covers any and every car and can mean whatever you need it to. Be it finding a good starting point, stripping it and performing a complete nut and bolt restoration, simply finding you an excellent example and ensuring it is what it claims, or something in the middle, whereby we find a good example and perform the repairs needed to make it an excellent one.
Regardless of which option you choose, the process is the same. After consultation with you about what you are looking for and your preferences, we search for good candidates that we think fulfil them; these are presented to you and from them, we whittle the list down to one or two that fit the bill. We visit them, assess them and if they are up the mark, we purchase the best one and bring it back to our workshop.
Once we have the car with us, it goes on the lift where we perform an exhaustive assessment, from front to back, noting any and every blemish and defect, generating a comprehensive engineers’ report. This report is used to create a complete restoration quote, which lists every element with parts and labour costs.
Having shared these with you, we ask you to come to our workshop to view the car, where we walk you around it and talk through the report. We explain the areas where we believe action is necessary, those where action is recommended and those that are cosmetic or minor. From there we have a discussion about which elements you would like rectified, any updates or upgrades you may be interested in and any changes you would like made.
The output of this conversation generates the Agreed Works Quote, a final list of all elements that you would like us to do and the complete costs. Once you have confirmed your approval of this list in writing, we start work.
At every stage of the process we maintain a private page for you on our website. During the search we show you all of the cars we are looking at, when we find 'the one', this page hosts the engineers report and some more pictures we take, particularly of the underside and any specific problem areas. When the works have been agreed, this page becomes the progress update, with a full list of the tasks being undertaken and their status so you can see how far we are through the list at any time.
We only ever do the work you have agreed. However, some elements may require investigation, which could find further faults and thus incur additional cost. We work on the basis of a £500 limit for any and all additional costs. As we progress with the build, any unplanned additional parts that are required, or investigation that takes longer than expected will only be performed up to a limit of £500 before we stop, brief you in detail and agree the next steps with you before proceeding.
This contingency or float enables us to work as quickly as possible, negating the need to contact you to confirm your approval for every small part we need, but protects you and more importantly your budget.
The cost of the process is split into three sections / payments:
Once we have found the car, we require the full asking price to be paid no later than the day before we go to view it; when the car is purchased, these funds will be used and any money saved, should we get the price down, will be held on account and put towards parts and labour. We do not make a profit from the vehicle purchase. What we buy it for is what you pay.
With the engineers’ report delivered, discussions completed and the final works quote provided, 50% is due before works can commence. Once these funds have been received, we will purchase the parts and begin work.
The remaining 50%, re-calculated should any additional requests have been made, or further parts purchased, will be required the day before collection or delivery. The car will not be released until the balance has been paid.
For stage one of the Source and Build process we charge 12 hours at our standard rate of £80 (+VAT), this covers the search for the car, inspection, collection, transport and engineers report and is due as part of the final payment. This is a fixed price, whether we view one car or five, the cost remains the same.
