A lot of classic owners store their cars during the winter, some cars need to be off the road for long periods for repairs, some cars are in collections that aren't driven and those vehicles kept for investment can be stored for decades while their value appreciates. In all of these cases, work is needed to prevent corrosion, damage and degradation.
Fuel can corrode the tank, the pipes and carburettors, oil can degrade, coolant can congeal and cause rust and moisture can destroy the chassis and interior; however cars prepped for storage and kept in the right way can emerge from their hibernation as fresh as when it went in.
While each car can have it's nuances and specific needs for long term storage, most require similar preparation and environments to protect them from the ravages of time.
Ideally a secure and air-conditioned environment should be used, preferably a sealed cover with a built-in dehumidifier, such as a Carcoon or similar product, these allow for more comprehensive preparation and provide the best conditions for long term storage. Such environments are not always possible though and as such, the steps that can be taken will vary to accommodate.
The following common steps are applicable to both environments:
Where an air-conditioned environment is to be used, the following additonal elements should be considered:
Where an air-conditioned environment is not possible, but the car is in garage or other dry space a good quality, close fitting soft cover should be used; these prevent dust, sunlight and other elements from degrading the paint and they also protect the glass as well as protecting the interior from direct sunlight.
Should the car need to be stored outside, the soft cover should be augmented with a high-quality waterproof cover, securely strapped to prevent it from being dislodged. Cars stored outside in this manner should be checked more often, every 30 days.
