While the 50s, 60s and 70s produced some of the best looking cars ever made, the limitations of the technology of the day meant that they didn't always work as well as they looked. We aim to help them with select upgrades designed to improve how they run and drive.
Technology has moved on in the last 70 years and while we don't like to ruin a beautiful classic with changes not in keeping with its class, some elements enhance it, make it a more enjoyable thing to own and bring the experience a little closer to the modern, yet keeping it firmly placed in its period.
While a lot of classics have options for these upgrades, some unfortunately do not, so please get in contact with us to discuss what can be done for your car.
As standard packages, we offer the following upgrade options:
Sympathetic fuel injection conversion, utilising the original carburettors as the throttle bodies, transforms the driving experience, making the engine more akin to your daily drive than the temperamental systems of the era, but retain the original look.
The upgrade involves fitting a high-pressure fuel pump, O2 sensor, self-learning ECU, a couple of sensors and the modified carbs themselves. With most of the kit hidden, the engine bay remains as beautiful as it was before.
Improved cooling options prevent overheating, a common issue with so many cars from these decades, as well as improving longevity. We offer several options from individual component upgrades to cooling packages.
Suspension upgrades come in 4 main sections:
While structural rigidity, axle design, chassis flexibility, weight distribution and suspension design all have an effect on how the car drives and handles, they cannot easily be changed. However, the spring elements of the suspension have a much greater impact on the cars' stability and road holding and as such, by changing these elements you can noticeably improve the handling and ride quality.
The options we can provide vary from car to car and cannot easily be priced as they range quite widely. Some vehicles, such as most Triumphs and Jaguars have regularly available and low-cost options, where as some other marques have a more limited range and a higher cost.
Some vehicles with leaf spring suspension can be retrofitted to use standard coil springs, which remove lateral movement and provide a much more progressive rebound rate, smoothing out the quality immensely.
A common change that we incorporate into our major builds is the use of polyurethane bushes, which provide a much better response than the original rubber units, noticeably improving the component they are damping.
We can offer individual component upgrades, or packages, covering every area, please contact us to discuss what we can do for you.
Utilising an electric motor mounted on the original steering column, our power steering conversions can be made to almost any vehicle and dramatically improve the feel and manoeuvrability of the car.
Air conditioning can be added where it did not exist or upgraded modern components can be used to replace the originals, to improve efficiency as well as your in-cabin experience.
Braking is possibly the most important system on any car and while some manufacturers put the best technology of the day on their cars, such as the Jaguar Mk2 with disc brakes front and rear, many did not. technology has vastly improved in this area and larger rotors, larger callipers, drum brake replacements and vented systems are possible (depending on the vehicle).
Unfortunately the equipment differs greatly from car to car, so generic pricing is not possible, but we would be more than happy to have a discussion about what you are looking for and design an upgrade for your classic.
Sound quality inside the cabin wasn't a priority for a lot of manufacturers and those who did apply it, used materials that by today's standards are a little lacking. modern sound deadening can improve the sound whilst driving as well as improve the response of speakers, by removing the reverberation of the metal they sit on.
Several options are available for any car, however it depends on what level of sound proofing you desire, as well as the size and design of your car, so we would need to discuss and design a package for you.
The interior of the car is first removed, then the original sound proofing (if applied) taken out. A base layer of deadening material is laid over the bare metal, which can and often is used as the only layer needed; the interior is then re-installed.
If required, a second, complimentary layer is applied (before the interior is re-installed), a thicker, softer material that acts as additional sound proofing, as well as insulation. Together these products noticeably improve the experience of the car.
If so desired, the headlining can also be removed and sound proofing appled to the roof and is one if the largest areas that can benefit from this treatment. Covering the ceiling is an additonal £640.
If there is anything we can help you with, please don't hesitate to contact us to discuss options and find a package that works for you.
While we offer the above standard upgrades, if there is anything you would like for your classic, whether it be a minor update, the inclusion of a specific upgrade, a change from left to right hand drive or even an EV conversion, then please get in touch, we'd be more than happy to help you.
